The State Of Memphis Tech Blogs
I’ve been living in Memphis, TN for about a year now, but haven’t taken the time to acquaint myself with any of my fellow bloggers. I also was in the market for a coffee shop with free wireless access. I decided to do a little digging today to see whose who, the results we’re underwhelming to say the least.
I wasn’t really surprised by the lack of tech related blogs, but I was surprised to find that most of the blogs in Memphis were either about Politics, Religion or Gay and Lesbian culture.
Why should I be surprised by this considering it’s 3 of the largest main stream issues in America today? I guess it was naive of me to think there would be at least a few tech related blogs worth reading.
I did eventually “find one”:http://blogs.commercialappeal.com/eric/ that is run by the largest news paper in our area. It should be hip and up to date right? Sorry, no dice. The blog hasn’t been updated since July 25th!! The last few post seemed like a list of “del.icio.us”:http://del.icio.us links rather than an actual blog post. Now I’m not trying to be overly critical of the author who I’m sure is a great guy and very intelligent, but I do want to offer a few words of advice incase you ever run up on this post. Please take this in good stride and not an attack on you personally.
Your blogging at one of the largest media outlets in Memphis and have the potential to educate and inspire thousands of Memphians. While I’m sure your pressed for time on occasions, add some substance to your blogs and do some research on the topics your blogging about.
Memphis is behind the times when it comes to tech and it will stay that way if the main stream Memphis media (thats you) doesn’t do a better job at trying to create a vibrant place for tech related companies and techies everywhere to thrive.
If we want to bring better tech jobs to Memphis we need to put some effort into figuring out what it takes and how to do it. It’s no small feat, but it’s not impossible to think that Memphis could be a leader in technology.
So how does your city size up in Technology?

I live in San Diego… we’ve got tech coming out of our ears!
Not a tech blog, but I do have a somewhat current list of hotspots in the city, though my usual bent is local entertainment. I try to keep it updated as things occur or are recommended to me. I know Quetzal (a place across the street from Sun Studios) and Sip* Coffee and Conversations are two that I need to put on there…
Does it really matter where your peers live? I can’t say I go looking for other Cardiff residents in my day to day online life.
Occassionally a co-worker happens to come into the same chatroom as I’m in, but it’s not something we try to do :)
PulpFaction – Great! I visited Cafe Francisco today just to check it out and see if it was a potential place I could hang out and work and I was very impressed with it.
As an example of just how deep my southern, small town roots run (Originally from Walnut, MS.) I have never spent much time in a coffee shop..heh. I’ve only been in a few to be honest, but have never considered working from one. Now that I’m my own boss I feel the need to get out of the house and try to work from somewhere else. I plan on going back to Cafe Francisco this week.
Anywho, I’ll be sure to check out your blog!
Dick – I don’t work with anyone from Memphis. I work with a lot of bloody Canadians and Brits. most of the time..hehe. So on that front, location doesn’t matter to me.
I was looking for locals around the blogsphere. Being able to put a face with the typeface is good sometimes and that is one point of this post.
Memphis bloggers aren’t all that techie-oriented, but they are a fine bunch. I bet the reason Eric doesn’t update more is that his tech skills are in VERY high demand around the city… plus he has kids, so there’s that, too. You aren’t in the center of the techno world in Memphis, but if you’re a techie, then isn’t the virtual world of the Internet enough?! :P
BTW, your blog design is really nice. I don’t often say, “Hey, what a nice blog design. Take a look at this,” but I said it today about yours.
Thanks Abby. :-)
I’m sure the kids thing plays a big role in being able to stay on top of things for Eric. Perhaps he should hand over the reigns to someone else if he’s pressed for time though? (I’m probably sounding real anal by now..hehe)
That’s why I moved outta the area Justin. :]
Hey Alex! It’s good to see someone in Memphis that shares my thoughts. How long have you been in Memphis?
Justin, it is indeed. I’ve been here for about four years now.
I am not a native memphian and I have to agree that this town needs tech! I feel like im trapped in 1990! Nothing tech what the f*! I hate the south!
